In 2012, the Elkin Valley Fiddlers held their first gathering beside the Yadkin River in Crater Park in Elkin, North Carolina, where they invited several bands to play on a wet, chilly Saturday afternoon in April. In spite of the weather, the musicians and fans had a great time, and the Roots Music Fest was born.

Since that spring, the Elkin Roots Music Fest has expanded to include a variety of genres and regional talent. After the venue changed from the Elkin Municipal Park to the Foothills Art Council garden, the Elkin Roots Music Festival settled on its final location with the completion of the Reeves Theater in 2018, where it continues to be an attraction performers and guests can look forward to each year during the month of June.
