"And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer." — F. Scott Fitzgerald

Summer is finally here, and it brings with it an array of vibrant events and exhibitions at the Foothills Arts Center. We are excited to showcase a diverse range of artistic expressions, foster community engagement, and create a space where everyone feels welcome. Here are some highlights for June:

1. Out & About Exhibit

Join us at Smalltown Gallery for the Out & About exhibit, featuring curated work in support of LGBTQ+ artists and allies. This exhibition celebrates the things that bring us together while shedding light on the conditions and misconceptions that still create barriers today. The exhibit opens on June 2 from 5:00-8:00 PM. Additionally, on Saturday, June 3, we invite you to a free screening of the heartwarming movie Love, Simon at 6:30 PM.

2. Follow the Thread: New Works by Tapestry Weavers South

Discover the intricate artistry of tapestry weaving at the Yadkin Valley Fiber Center. Join us on Friday, June 2, from 5:30-8:30 PM for the opening reception of Follow the Thread, a new works exhibit by Tapestry Weavers South, an organization dedicated to advancing the art and craft of tapestry weaving. This vibrant exhibition is a testament to their talent.

3. NC Trail Days Elkin’s ARTrail Guided Hike

Immerse yourself in the artistic spirit of Elkin with a Gallery/Studio stroll on Friday, June 2, from 5:00-7:00 PM. Led by Elkin's Main Street Representative, this guided hike will take you through 8-10 downtown locations filled with local art. Meet the artists, shop, explore, and enjoy creativity, wine, and live music along the way.

4. Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention

Mark your calendars for the Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention, taking place on Friday, June 16, and Saturday, June 17, at Surry Community College. This annual event celebrates the historic folk music of Surry County. Join us for two days of lively performances, engaging activities, and a deep dive into the rich cultural heritage of our region.

Looking ahead, we have exciting community theatre performances lined up for July, and it’s never too soon to reserve your tickets. The Foothills Theatre will present Monty Python's Spamalot, a hilarious comedy that will have you laughing in your seats. The Foothills Children's Theatre brings the beloved story of Disney's Finding Nemo Jr. to life, enchanting audiences of all ages.

We are also thrilled to announce the start of a three-part Drawing Fundamentals series, perfect for those looking to hone their artistic skills. Additionally, our Foothills Plein Air group excursions will resume at the end of July. Stay tuned for more details!
